What is Aflatoxin? – Pet Food Safety of PetStore Kenya Brands

Nairobi, KENYA, May 13th 2020: Petstore Kenya and its affiliate Loki Ventures Ltd have been made aware of a number of issues related to possible aflatoxin contamination of ready to eat dog food (kibble) in the market.

What is aflatoxin?

Aflatoxins are a family of toxins produced by certain fungi are found on agricultural crops.

How does a pet get aflatoxin?

Most dry pet food has a vegetable, grain or animal component. Either the grain itself may be contaminated or the animal component (or both) may be contaminated at the start of the manufacturing process.

There is a risk of aflatoxin contamination reaching your pet IF a raw material (like those mentioned above) has not been tested properly for aflatoxin and is processed into a dry kibble AND the kibble is not later tested for aflatoxin.

How can I be sure my pet food is safe?

Send a batch to any of the independent labs for aflatoxin testing: Nairobi University Vet lab, Analabs, Prolab, Crop Nuts, etc.

We would like to ensure our customers and stakeholders that Loki Ventures Ltd and PetStore Kenya only import and distribute dog food and cat food of the highest possible standard: King, Trendline, Bonnie, Proline, Reflex and Spectrum.

We work exclusively with a factory in Turkey that is compliant with the following international certifications and standards of manufacturing:

  • ISO 9001:2008
  • ISO 22000:2005
  • CE – conformity to EU standards

We selected this factory as they align with our company values around “healthy, happy pets”. Our Directors have verified, in person, the following good manufacturing practices:

  1. Every batch of raw material that is used in kibble production is examined via spectrometry for compliance.
  2. Every batch of agricultural input is tested for aflatoxin.
  3. Every batch of produced food is tested for conformity and contaminants, including aflatoxin.
  4. Aflatoxin blockers are incorporated into the food itself so that the risk of aflatoxin contamination is
minimized in the event of an unlikely exposure.

Once in our warehouse, all pet food is stored in a well-ventilated, cool warehouse out of any direct exposure to sunlight or humidity thereby bringing any risk of aflatoxin from storage down to nil.

When switching cat food or dog food, always remember to follow the 7-day transition protocol stated on the packaging. Take note that diarrhea and an upset stomach for up to 10 days is a normal occurrence while new gut flora colonise.
