Description

Pestigon Spot-On for Large Dogs (20–40 kg) is a veterinary flea and tick treatment in the form of a topical solution. Each pack contains 3 pipettes of 2.68 ml, with Fipronil 268 mg as the active ingredient.

Product Overview

  • Brand: Pestigon (by Norbrook Laboratories)
  • Pack size: 3 pipettes, each containing 2.68 ml of solution.
  • Target: Dogs weighing 20–40 kg (one pipette per dog in this weight range).
  • Formulation: Clear, colourless to pale yellow solution for topical (spot‑on) application to the skin.

Active & Inactive Ingredients

  • Each 2.68 ml pipette contains Fipronil 268 mg.
  • Other excipients include: Butylated hydroxyanisole (E320) ~0.536 mg and Butylated hydroxytoluene (E321) -0.268 mg.

Indications (What it treats)

  • For the treatment of infestations by fleas (specifically Ctenocephalides felis) in dogs. The product shows immediate insecticidal effect and persistent action against new adult flea infestations for up to 8 weeks.
  • Also effective as acaricide (against ticks) for certain species:
  • Up to -2 weeks against Ixodes ricinus.
  • Up to -3 weeks against Rhipicephalus sanguineus.
  • Up to -4 weeks against Dermacentor reticulatus.
  • It may be used as part of a treatment strategy in cases of flea‑allergy dermatitis (FAD), when previously diagnosed by a veterinarian.

Dosage & Administration

  • Use one 2.68 ml pipette for each dog weighing 20–40 kg.
  • For dogs over 60 kg, two 2.68 ml pipettes may be needed.
  • Application method:
    1. Hold the pipette upright and tap the narrow part so the contents settle in the main body.
    2. Break off the snap‑top along the scored line.
    3. Part the dog’s fur between the shoulder‑blades until you see the skin. Place the pipette tip directly onto the skin and press gently to release the solution in one or two spots.
  • After application, avoid bathing or immersing the dog in water immediately as this may reduce effectiveness. (Hint from typical spot‑on precautions.)

Contraindications & Precautions

  • For external use only. Do not use on cats.
  • Not for Cats, puppies under 8 weeks, or dogs under 20 kg.Not for puppies younger than 8 weeks (data limited).
  • Do not use in sick animals (systemic disease, fever) or recovering animals without veterinary supervision.
  • Avoid contamination of the animal’s environment (especially aquatic ecosystems). The product is toxic to aquatic organisms.
  • After applying, ensure other animals don’t lick the treated dog at the application site.
  • If the treated area becomes sticky or appears wet, this may indicate excess product; avoid excessive wetting of hairs near treated spot for 24 hours.
  • One pipette per dog (20–40 kg), applied to the skin between the shoulder blades.

Packaging & Storage

  • The pipettes are sealed in multi‑layer packaging (e.g., for protection from light and moisture).
  • Shelf life: Typically about 2 years for the packaged medicinal product.
  • Store in the original container, protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Benefits & What to Expect

  • Quick start of activity: fleas killed early, then ongoing protection.
  • Helps manage both fleas and some tick species, reducing parasite load and associated irritation or disease risk.
  • One pipette covers a full dog (20–40 kg) for a month (or until next monthly dose).
  • Simplifies parasite control for medium‐to‐large dogs through a single monthly spot‑on treatment.

Tips for Best Use & Safety

  • Ensure the dog’s coat is dry and you can access the skin easily at the shoulder area.
  • After application, avoid touching the site and allow product to dry before petting.
  • Do not bathe the dog immediately after application; wait at least 24 hours if possible.
  • Monitor the dog for any unusual reactions (e.g., excessive salivation, nervous signs, skin irritation). If any occur, consult your veterinarian.
  • Maintain regular monthly treatment during high parasite activity seasons (spring, summer) especially in Kenya where ticks and fleas are prevalent.
  • Complement spot-on treatment with good environmental control: vacuum indoors, treat pet bedding, reduce tick habitats in yard.
